How to Fix Clogged Misting Nozzles

Why nozzles clog in the first place

High-pressure misting nozzles have an extremely small orifice, which is what atomizes water into a true dry fog at 1000 PSI. That small opening is also easy to block. In the Phoenix metro the biggest culprit is hard water, which leaves calcium and mineral scale behind as the water evaporates at the tip.

• Soak them in warm white vinegar for several hours to dissolve scale
• Gently clear the orifice with a fine brush or soft wire, never forcing it
• Rinse in clean water and check that light passes through the tip
• Flush the open line briefly to clear debris before reinstalling

When to clean versus replace

If a nozzle sprays a clean, fine cone after soaking, it is good to go back in. If it still sputters, drips, or shoots a stream, the orifice is likely worn or permanently scaled and replacement is the smarter move. Nozzles are inexpensive compared to the annoyance of uneven fog.
