Common misting system problems and their causes

A high-pressure misting system is simple mechanically, so failures tend to repeat. Knowing the symptom points you straight at the part. Weak or uneven fog is almost always nozzles or pressure. Dripping and puddles usually mean a worn nozzle or a fitting. No fog at all points to the pump or the water supply.

Arizona's hard water is the hidden factor behind a lot of these. Mineral scale builds up inside tiny nozzle orifices and on pump valves, which is why regular cleaning and the right filtration matter so much here.

• Weak or patchy fog: clogged nozzles or low pump pressure
• Dripping after shutoff: worn nozzles or failing fittings
• No fog: pump issue, tripped power, or water supply problem
• Leaks along the line: loose brass fittings or damaged tubing

Clogged nozzles, the number one culprit

Because nozzle orifices are measured in microns, even a little mineral scale or grit chokes them. Clogged nozzles show up as some nozzles fogging and others dribbling or doing nothing, leaving cold and dead spots across the patio.

Many clogs clean up by soaking the nozzles in white vinegar to dissolve the scale, then flushing the line. Nozzles that stay blocked or drip after cleaning are worn out and should be replaced. Stainless anti-drip nozzles hold up better and shut off cleanly, so they are worth the upgrade if yours are old brass tips.

Low pressure and pump trouble

If the whole system fogs weakly, the pump is often the issue. High-pressure pumps need clean oil, intact seals, and a steady water feed to hold 1000 PSI. Low oil, a tired seal, a clogged inlet filter, or a kinked supply line all drop pressure and turn fog into spray.

Routine pump service, including oil changes and filter checks, prevents most of this. When a pump has lost pressure for good, replacing it restores the true high-pressure fog. We carry pumps sized for the job, roughly 1/4 GPM for up to three fans and 1/2 GPM for four to six.

Leaks, drips, and fittings

Leaks usually live at the connections. Brass fittings can loosen with heat cycling and vibration, and tubing can crack where it was kinked or sun-baked. A leak wastes water, drops pressure, and leaves wet spots, so it is worth chasing down early.

Repairs are straightforward: tighten or replace the fitting, or cut out and rejoin a damaged section of line. Good brass fittings and quality high-pressure line make these fixes last, which is why we stock them rather than the cheapest parts we can find.
